Vector vs PNG for Screen Printing & DTF: Which to Use

PNG or vector for screen print and DTF? It depends on the method and the artwork — learn when each one is the right file.

One of the most common things that slows a print job down is also one of the smallest: the file. A customer grabs a logo off a website, exports it from a slide, or screenshots it from Instagram, then sends it over assuming any image works for any print. It doesn't. Screen printing and DTF handle artwork in completely different ways, and a file that is perfect for one can be useless for the other.

You will hear a lot of people say "always use vector." That advice is close, but it is not quite right, and following it blindly leads to confusion the first time someone hands a DTF printer a PNG that prints beautifully. The honest answer depends on two things: the print method, and the type of artwork. Let's break it down the way a production shop actually thinks about it.

Quick answer: For spot-color screen printing you almost always need vector (AI, EPS, PDF) so each color can be split into its own clean screen. For DTF, a high-resolution PNG — 300 DPI at the real print size, with a transparent background — can print well, because DTF is a full-color digital process with no separations. But vector is still the safer master file for logos, solid brand colors, and small text, and it is the fix when the PNG you were sent is low-resolution. In real life the problem is rarely "PNG vs vector" in theory. It is that the PNG is a 72 DPI grab off a website.

What "vector" and "PNG" actually mean for printing

A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG, and most logo PDFs) describes the artwork as math — points, paths, and curves. It scales to any size with razor-sharp edges, and the colors stay as clean, separate shapes you can edit or split apart. That last part matters more than people realize for print.

A PNG is a raster file: a fixed grid of pixels. It supports transparency, which is useful, but it only has the detail you captured when it was made. Blow a small PNG up past its pixel count and the edges go soft and jagged. There is no setting that adds detail that was never there.

Keep that one difference in mind — vector scales and separates, raster is locked to its pixels — and the rest of this makes sense.

Screen printing: spot-color work needs vector

In traditional screen printing, each ink color is burned onto its own screen. To do that, the artwork has to be split into clean, solid-color shapes with sharp edges, one shape per color. That separation is exactly what vector art makes easy and what a flat PNG makes painful. You cannot cleanly pull individual colors out of a raster image, and any enlargement shows pixelated edges on the screen.

So for the bread-and-butter screen print job — a logo or lettering in one to four solid colors — the shop needs vector. Send a clean AI or EPS and the separations are straightforward. Send a low-res PNG and someone has to rebuild it before anything gets burned.

There is one fair exception worth knowing. Full-color or photographic designs printed through simulated process or 4-color process screen printing do use high-resolution raster art, because those methods break the image into halftone dots. That is a different workflow. But for solid-color logos and text, which is most of what shops run, vector is the file you want.

DTF: when a PNG is genuinely fine (and when it isn't)

DTF (direct-to-film) is a full-color digital transfer. The printer lays down CMYK plus a white underbase and prints the whole design at once — no screens, no separations. Because it prints from raster, a properly made PNG works great.

The key words are "properly made." For DTF that means roughly 300 DPI at the final print size, with a transparent background and clean edges. A 1200-pixel PNG printed at four inches wide is plenty. A 500-pixel screenshot stretched across an eleven-inch back print is going to look soft and pixelated no matter how good the printer is.

So when would you still want vector for DTF? Three situations come up constantly:

  • Solid brand colors. Vector holds exact colors and crisp edges, which matters when a brand is fussy about its logo.
  • Small text and thin lines. Vector stays sharp at any size. Raster softens, and tiny text is where that shows first.
  • Reuse and resizing. If the same logo will run at different sizes or on different products, a vector master lets you export a perfectly clean PNG at whatever size and resolution the RIP needs.

That is the real relationship for DTF: vector is the master, the high-res PNG is the export. DTF does not require vector, but vector future-proofs the artwork and quietly solves the low-resolution problem before it becomes a reprint.

The real problem usually isn't the format. It's the resolution.

Here is what actually walks in the door most days: a logo saved off a website, a compressed JPG, a screenshot, or a small social-media export — almost always around 72 DPI. It looks fine on a phone and falls apart the moment it is printed at size.

And you cannot fix that by changing the DPI number in software. Bumping a 72 DPI file to "300 DPI" without adding real detail just spreads the same pixels over more space, or runs an upscale that guesses and blurs. The pixels simply are not there.

The clean fix is to rebuild the logo as vector by hand, then export it at any size and resolution you need for either method. That is the whole point of vector tracing — taking a blurry JPG, PNG, or screenshot and redrawing it into sharp, scalable artwork that prints clean on screen print, DTF, vinyl, or signage.

What about the other files people send?

It is not always PNG or vector. Here is the short version of the rest:

  • JPG: raster, lossy compression, and no transparency. The compression leaves faint halos around edges, which is the last thing you want on a clean line-art logo. Avoid it as a logo source when you can.
  • PDF, AI, EPS: usually vector, and usually ideal — but a PDF can sometimes just contain a raster image inside it, so it is worth confirming the art is actually vector and not a photo in a vector wrapper.
  • SVG: vector and web-friendly. A perfectly good source to work from.

Rule of thumb: vector containers (AI, EPS, vector PDF, SVG) are safe. Raster files (PNG, JPG) are only safe when they are genuinely high-resolution and matched to the right method.

If the logo is also going on embroidery

A quick heads-up, because this trips people up. Clean vector artwork helps before embroidery too — it gives the digitizer sharp edges to work from. But a vector file is not an embroidery file. Embroidery machines need a digitized stitch file (DST, PES, EXP) that tells the needle where to go, which is a separate step.   • The best source file you actually have — send the original, not a screenshot of it
  • The print method (screen print or DTF) and the number of colors
  • The final print size
  • Brand or spot colors, with Pantone references if you know them
  • The output format you need (vector AI/EPS, or a high-res PNG)
  • Your deadline

Can I use a PNG for screen printing?
